The test downloads and uploads data for a fixed time, so fast connections can use several hundred MB. Prefer Wi-Fi to mobile data.

How this speed test works
The test runs in your browser against Cloudflare's global network. It first measures ping and jitter with small requests, then downloads and uploads data over several parallel connections for a few seconds each. The first moments are ignored as warm-up, and the request size grows automatically so fast connections are fully used. While the download runs, it also measures ping under load to reveal bufferbloat. Server and location details come from Cloudflare; the optional ISP-name lookup only runs when you click it and uses ipwho.is.
Results are shown in megabits per second (Mbps). Divide by 8 to estimate megabytes per second. For the most reliable number, use an Ethernet cable, close other downloads and pause your VPN. Results are an estimate and can vary from test to test.

Speed test FAQ
How much data does the speed test use?
It depends on your speed, because the test downloads and uploads for a fixed time. On a fast connection that can be several hundred megabytes, so use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data if you have a limited plan. The page shows how much data each test used.
Why is my speed lower than what my provider advertises?
Advertised speeds are best-case maximums. Wi-Fi signal, router quality, other devices, VPNs, congestion and distance to the test server all lower the result. For the most reliable number, connect with an Ethernet cable and pause other downloads.
What is ping, jitter and latency under load?
Ping is the round-trip time to a server in milliseconds. Jitter is how much that time varies. Latency under load is your ping while the connection is busy downloading; a large increase (bufferbloat) makes video calls and games lag even when the speed is high.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps means megabits per second, and file sizes use megabytes. Divide Mbps by 8 to estimate MB/s: 200 Mbps is about 25 MB/s.
