Image tools for smaller files and portrait edits

Prepare an image for a form, a page or a personal project. Choose compression when the file is too large, portrait editing when the background needs attention, or the photo maker when you need a precise crop and print size.

Choose by the job you need to do

Start with the task, then check the tool’s limits before relying on a result.

Reduce an image file size

Adjust format, dimensions and quality, then compare the actual result. Re-encoding is not guaranteed to make every image smaller. Use PNG when transparency matters.

Make a portrait background transparent

This is a person segmentation tool, not a universal product or object cutout service. Export PNG to retain transparency; inspect hair, glasses and clothing edges at full size.

Replace or soften a portrait background

Choose a solid color or a local background image, or blur the existing background. Uneven lighting, multiple people and fine edges can reduce mask quality.

Crop and print a photo at a chosen size

Choose a size, position the crop and export a 300-DPI photo or a 4 × 6-inch print sheet. The tool does not certify official acceptance; consult the issuing authority’s current photo requirements.

Before editing an important photo

Keep your original image. The portrait tools identify people, so they are best suited to a clear portrait with a visible subject. They are not designed for product photos or arbitrary object removal. Check fine edges before sharing or printing an export.

Portrait segmentation downloads a self-hosted model and browser runtime when you first process a portrait. That initial download is larger than the page itself. Images are then processed in browser memory; these tools do not upload your photo to an editing API. A slower phone or an unusually large image may need more time.

The portrait tools accept supported image files up to 20 MiB and 32 megapixels, with a maximum input dimension of 12,000 pixels. Their working image is reduced to a maximum edge of 2,000 pixels. Passport-size output is a crop and sizing aid: the issuing authority decides whether a photo meets its current requirements.
